Youth Talk - Three-minute batteries

Before mobile phones were around my parents tell me that we had to live with a phone connected to a wire from the wall. Now it appears we are stepping back in time with a constant need to use chargers.

I find it difficult to go 30 minutes on my IPhone 5 without having to put it back on life support for another hour.

According to a recent survey the average phone should last up to eight hours until its battery is depleted. However, in reality, that does not appear to be the case. Surely, with the technology available today, it’s surprising why there is a constant need for a wired connection to a power source.

My phone has single-handedly forced me to plug itself into a power source for the fear of losing contact with my social media demands.

Sometimes I feel that our lives are addicted to the phones … and our phones seem to be addicted to more power!

I have noticed how heavy and low usage changes a battery’s lifespan but watching a YouTube clip should not make it go from 84 per cent to 29 per cent in a few minutes, surely?

My grandma uses her Nokia 6300 – an ‘antique’ by all counts – and says she has not had to charge it since I last visited her two weeks ago.

This begs the question, how can phone manufacturers upgrade everything on a device … and yet, seemingly, degrade the battery?

Any tips or suggestions from readers would be welcomed. At the moment it seems that I am back to the wire.
