Ten years on, the Al Dana dhow disaster has not been forgotten for those marking it. May the victims Rest in Peace.

A memorial stone at the Old Christian Cemetery on Zubarah Avenue pays tribute to the people who lost their lives in the tragedy. The black granite structure features the names of the 58 victims who died when the vessel capsized off the coast of Muharraq.

The stone is inscribed in gold writing with the message: ‘In memory of those who lost their lives so tragically in Bahrain’s dhow disaster, 30 March 2006’.

It lists the names of the deceased and ends with the poignant words: ‘The dreams we turn from paper into form forge our teams, our friendships and we remember them. This is just to remember the victims, of many nationalities and religions, who died’.

More than 70 people were also injured when the vessel capsized during a Nass, Murray and Roberts party to celebrate the completion of concreting work at the Bahrain World Trade Centre. The South African company had hired it from Island Tours, which leased it from the Abdulla Al Kobaisi Company for Travel and Tourism.

* An annual golf tournament to raise money towards the upkeep of the memorial stone was staged at the weekend
