Birthday boy Azzam Khan won the chance to meet Arsenal legend Ian Wright and ask him a question after winning a GulfWeekly competition.
The Pakistani schoolboy was among scores of kids from Tekkers Academy and Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain (ASSB) who greeted the star on Friday afternoon at the RCSI indoor sports hall in Busaiteen.
Azzam, who celebrated his ninth birthday on Sunday, lives in Saar with his parents, Ali and Zarmine, and younger brother, Zidane, two.
“I asked Ian if he had always wanted to be a striker and why?” said the promising midfielder who attends St Christopher’s School.
Wright admitted he had always preferred playing up front throughout his footballing career, for one main reason: “I just loved scoring goals!” he said.
The prolific striker played 581 league games, scoring 387 goals for seven clubs in England and Scotland and was Arsenal’s top scorer for six seasons in a row.
Azzam and his delighted dad, Ali, 35, an HSBC Bank executive, are Arsenal fans. “I remember a nine-year-old boy joining my class in Karachi who had lived in England close to their old Highbury ground,” explained Ali, wearing his Arsenal shirt. “He was a dedicated supporter and as we became firm friends I found out all about the club and started following the team too. Watching Azzam meet Wrighty was wonderful!”
