Brexit has taken us by surprise, that’s for sure, whether you are a ‘remainer’ or an ‘exiter’!

Now, inevitably all eyes are on the United Kingdom from every corner of the globe.

The referendum outcome feels like it came as a shock … but was it really? Having also witnessed the Scottish Referendum, last year, politics in the UK it appears has had a proverbial kick up the backside!

What does it mean for us British expats? The one thing I have learned throughout both of these events is that being an expat and having an opinion that differs from folks back home can be quite an eye-opener.

Dare to comment on social media at your peril because before you know it, you are accused of deserting the UK and why should you be allowed an opinion!

I chose to refrain from sharing my political views this time round as I’m still reeling from the backlash during the Scottish Referendum - help Ma Boab [Editor’s note: an expression of mock surprise around Scotland] should we have to suffer yet another one at the hands of Nicola Sturgeon.

As I ready the family for our summer trip home to the UK, I have warned and bribed the children to keep our political views under their hats.

I shall decline any political chat whilst back on British soil and I already know which friend will be gunning for the expat angle on Brexit. I had better not mention the expat rush to buy GB Pounds Sterling as its value dropped.
