Fascism is closing in and a German refugee arrives in Marseilles assuming the identity of a dead novelist, whose papers are his ticket out of France. While learning the ropes of the refugee community, he becomes enmeshed in the lives of desperate young mother, her son and mysterious woman named Marie, the wife of the man whose identity he has stolen.
