Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters have accused Meryl Streep of discriminating against the sport during an awards ceremony speech The 19-time Oscar nominee prompted widespread controversy with her comments about Donald Trump during her emotional Golden Globes speech.

Actress Meryl Streep’s recent anti-Donald Trump rant at the Golden Globes not only got the US President-elect, who takes office on Friday, riled, it upset sports fans too … and led to an invitation from Bahrain.

In the 67-year-old’s speech, accepting a lifetime achievement award, she said: “Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners and if we kick them all out, you’ll have nothing to watch but football and Mixed Martial Arts, which are not the arts.”

But several high-profile fighters and prominent figures linked with the sport took to Twitter to take issue with the star. Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) host Megan Olivi wrote: “Really weird to see someone talk about not discriminating then basically discriminate against an entire group of skilled, hard-working people.”

Brave Combat Federation president Mohammed Shahid hopes to change the star’s mind. “We are huge fans of Meryl Streep’s work and consider her one of the greatest actresses of all time”, he said.

“That’s why we felt really sorry about her words towards the sport we love, support and work for. But the truth is - we’re ready to change her mind and that’s why I invited her to attend one of our events”.

The Whisperer will let you know if she accepts.
