As part of the school’s on-going eco-initiatives, Nadeen School has recently installed four recycling machines on the school campus and also launched the use and sale of recycled pencils.
In conjunction with G-Vision and a campaign to ‘let’s go green to keep our Bahrain clean’ - the school’s four recycling machines have so far processed more than 18,000 plastic bottles and aluminium cans.
“By making the recycling programme an inter-house competition, the children, parents and staff members have really become enthusiastic about bringing in as many bottles and cans as possible,” said Shanee Puri, director of the school.
G-Vision provides what its labels as ‘G-Point reverse vending machines’ to schools, malls and other high footfall places. Users pop their plastic bottles or aluminium cans into the machine in exchange for a point, so the more exchanged, the more points are earned.
Once added up they can be swapped for prizes. Some parents and members of staff have their own accounts to accumulate points but most, however, are donating the points to the school. The initiative has turned into an inter-house competition and the highest one-time donation was for an impressive 148 bottles!
The school’s other recent ecoinitiative has been a partnership with Treewise Pencils who make pencils out of 100 per cent recycled newspaper. “The school community has whole-heartedly supported this new campaign at the school.
By using Treewise pencils the children know that they are helping to save trees and our environment and the parents are buying them to use at home and at work too,” added Shanee.
These recent project successes are in addition to the school’s already popular and well-known organic egg sales, composting programme, up-cycling projects and an organic vegetable garden.
