The weekend’s golf at Awali was looking rather doubtful after Thursday evening’s rain but fortunately the 80 golfers were able to cast off their winter woollies, for one day anyway, as they were welcomed by blue skies, sunshine and warmth to compete in the BMMI Medal competition.
Overall winner Farooq Ahmed took full advantage of the perfect conditions to lead the pack and claim the top spot with an excellent score of nett 65. Hot on his heels was runner-up, Ahmed Al Noaimi, winning on countback from Jasper Meinema, with nett 66.
Ahmed’s fine performance was good enough to close out cousin Diab, both with gross scores 71, to win the medal which is awarded to the player with the best gross score of the day.
At the prize-giving ceremony Club Captain Bill Scarth thanked BMMI for its continued sponsorship of the competition, now in its 43rd year. He also bid farewell to Graeme Newport, a popular member, who is leaving the island after several years.
