ALL good things must come to an end, and today was the first day back to school, after the festive break, for my three children.
Remarkably, we all managed the 5.45am alarm call and actually ate breakfast together, fairly harmoniously.
Late morning and unlike after the long summer holidays when I felt a pang of sadness at the house being eerily quiet and no one calling out my name, all I missed this morning was the Christmas tree, a bit of Broadway glamour twinkling by the window.
With the 12th day after Christmas passed all the Christmas decorations are down and the house is looking very bare, almost as bare as the Quality Street tin with only a few Strawberry Delights rolling around.
With a bit of space I thought about New Year’s resolutions, how millions of us have made resolutions promising to improve our lives by eating better, losing weight, quit smoking, exercising more etc. Then, by mid-January most people will have broken their resolutions, which can lead to people feeling depressed, stressed out or disappointed.
And, I totally get it, so I decided this year not to make any New Year’s resolutions but just to focus on how to make my life better by avoiding goals that are only made for short-range desires.
Little things can make a big difference and this year (after finishing off the last of the Quality Street chocolates) I have decided to practice gratitude and to surround myself with things that make me happy.
My new mantra, ‘if it doesn’t serve you, let it go’ and, lastly, to avoid anger. Not sure I can achieve them but like many of you that have made New Year’s resolutions, it’s good to be able to reflect and make positive changes … however small.
