Competitors in the INFONAS Watson Salver enjoyed a perfect day for golf at Awali Golf Club (AGC) … but not as much as winner Pete Rogers.
The illustrious Rogers is a long-time member of AGC and a fixture on the course. He won with a score of 6 up in ideal playing conditions, sunny and mild all morning, with only a slight breeze coming through in the afternoon.
The Watson Salver gets its name from its donor Noel Watson, president of AGC for the 1958 to 1960 seasons. This competition is in the Bogey format: if the net score (gross score with handicap allowance) at a hole results in a score below the hole’s par, the score is ‘+’; equal to the hole’s par is ‘0’; and above the hole’s par is ‘-’. The pluses and minuses result in the overall score – easy really!
Second and third spots were taken by Ahmed Yousif Rahma and club captain Paul Anderson, both with a score of 5 up, followed by Anurag Bajaj and Abdulla Eid, both with 4 up.
Just behind them were Ateeq Majali, Phil Sadler and Abdulla Sultan Faraj, all with 3 up with ninth and 10th places taken by Kwang Bok Kim and Adel Al Gaoud, both with 2 up.
Losing on Countback were Farooq Ahmed, Nawaf Salem Al Noaimi, Ebrahim Al Hashel and Dong Jin Jeong (all 2 up).
The Best Gross Winner was Ebrahim Al Hashel with 73.
Best Lady was Sarah Hobday with 1 up and she also took one of the longest drive prizes alongside Jo Pawson, Chris Gregory and Sultan Mubarak.
Nearest the Pin prizes went to Kerry Diaper, Abdulla Eid and Yousif Yacoob.
Special recognition awards went to two longest-standing members, Beth Robinson and Ahmed Bahar.
INFONAS sponsored a table of prizes and a lovely meal along with Al Areen Palace & Spa, Optica and the Golden Tulip.
Next up at AGC: On Friday the Sheikh Abdulrahman bin Fares Al Khalifa Cup, a medal singles strokeplay competition, will be staged.
Entry is open to handicapped members of Bahrain Golf Club and Awali Golf Club.
