Take dead aim

Whilst we all know the importance of aiming the club, it is still one of the most common faults I see in amateur golfers. Without the correct aim, we are left trying to compensate during the swing to get the ball back on line or we just hit it dead straight missing the target.

Next time you address the ball use the following visualisation to ‘take dead aim’.

1. Stand behind the ball, drawing an imaginary line between the ball and your target.

2. Pick out a mark roughly 1ft in front of the ball.

3. Line your club up squarely with the mark you picked out and then set your feet up parallel to that line. It can be useful to think of ‘train tracks’ to give you a clear image. Ball, club and target on one side of the track and your feet and body on the other.

You are now aligned with your target, take one last look and then pull the trigger.
