I was ‘weirded out’ when I received a WhatsApp forward with a list of ‘important days to celebrate’, namely Friendship Day, Mother’s Day, Chocolate Day, and some 30 other ones.

Quickly adding up other festivals and events, my maths brain declared that we must be devoting 12 per cent of the year to these made up moments.

I couldn’t help but wonder why we have to wait and design these opportunities and assign days to celebrate. Why can’t we just start our own party?

Yes, I’m talking about celebrating your own moments. Acknowledging what is important to YOU. And there are so many of them! Do not wait for big achievements – they are few and far between; it is the smaller moments and achievements, the everyday little, happy things that we should embrace and make the most of.

Managing to prove a trigonometric identity. Starting a new Modern Family episode. Getting a couple of extra hours of sleep. A new opportunity at work ... invest in what you find worth celebrating and what is important to your close ones!

Press the pause button, stay with the moment, do a jig, call up a friend or indulge yourself with a bite of a favourite food!
