Two sides of a coin exist to every situation; there are pros and cons for most things in life.
This is especially true when it comes to social media. A great tool for connecting with people, pursuing your interests via the internet and discovering new things, it is little wonder social media is so widely consumed.
But another reason for its popularity is its addictiveness.
Many sites use software that enables ‘infinite scrolling’, where you browse the platform with no end in sight, and for those of us who need to keep a check on our time spent online, this can pose a problem.
If you’ve noticed, app notifications appear in red, the colour with the longest wavelength and hence the one best equipped for capturing one’s attention (think major fast food chains and ‘stop’ and ‘danger’ signs). This makes it even harder to put down your phone.
Still, there are ways to prevent your attention being constantly diverted by these sites on the Internet.
Turning off notifications, allocating set times for social media usage as well as keeping logged out of social media sites are all ways that will help you get distracted less.
