Every year families spend hours rummaging through their wardrobes, basements, attics and store rooms to drag out old ornaments to decorate their homes for the festive season.

Designers suggest putting the plastic away and going for a more ‘au natural’ vibe this winter.

Swedish retailer H&M Home, for example, has created two nature-inspired looks to keep bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and living spaces looking cosy and chic for the chillier days to come. After all, the holidays are all about togetherness and relaxing with family and friends indoors.

People can choose to be rustic and bring that winter wonderland inside with landscaped-theme cushions, covers and rugs featuring greens and animal prints or go down the elegant route using golden colours and lux materials.

Add to the rustic ambiance with white chunky knits, prints inspired by the flora and fauna of a wintry forest with deers and pine branches and natural materials such as linen, jute and wood. Keep the country-side vibes alive with faux fur and fresh modern reds.

For those who prefer a more glamourous setting to the celebrations think luxury by adding golden and amber hues as well as velvet, brass and bronze materials.

“I’m so excited for the holiday season to start, and I’m so looking forward to see how our customers include our products in their celebrations,” said Evelina Kravaev Söderberg, head of design at H&M Home. “In many homes, treasured items form part of the traditions and it’s a wonderful thought that perhaps our cheerful fox mug will become part of someone’s childhood memories one day!”
