For more than 20 years Pantone’s Colour of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries including fashion, home furnishings and industrial design, as well as product, packaging, and graphic design.
At the beginning of the New Year, more than 10,000 designers and producers held their breaths in anticipation of the latest colour craze to be unveiled and to set the pace for the rest of the year.
Pantone’s Colour of the Year for 2019 is ‘Living Coral’. It is a nurturing colour that appears in every day natural surroundings and at the same time, currently displays a lively presence on social media.
According to experts, it is ‘welcoming’ and it encourages ‘light-hearted activity’. It symbolises people’s innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits as well as the desire for playful expression.
The colour coral in itself resides between red and orange at the point of cross-over and is comprised of two parts red and one part yellow. This vibrant colour corresponds to the element of water and the soothing energy of the ocean.
The word itself is Greek and means ‘daughter of the sea’. The combination usually supports creative energies and it is fresh, invigorating and feminine.
Living Coral is a light colour that brings comfort and familiarity. It is considered by colour gurus at Pantone as the ideal shade for those who love trends and yet want to decorate with a difference. The shade is also believed to reduce self-consciousness and allows people to express themselves with confidence.
It is great for those looking for a refreshing colour to unwind to at home or for staying productive at the workplace.
Furniture brand MURANTI, for example, which creates symmetry between the mind and the heart of any interior decoration, found inspiration from this colour.
Currently one of its popular products which is on point with the trend is the Andesine armchair. It is fully upholstered with velvet that will instantly add a special charisma, grace and glamour to any room.
Paint companies are also in a rush for the colour. Many are suggesting using it to brighten up bedrooms, living rooms or study areas.
The colour is also being used on coffee tables such as DENY Designs’ round side-table. It combines two trends in one. The agate-inspired side table features a printed design and gold Aston legs. Place it next to your favourite reading chair or use it as a bold bedside table.
Another interiors suggestion is to add a throw or rug in the coral colour range such as the vintage-looking Raya rug from Lulu & Georgia which features classic Moroccan influences and hints of coral.
