Following the success of last year’s Art for Autism Awareness event, RIA Centre is delighted to invite young and old of all abilities to our Trash to Treasure T-shirt up-cycling extravaganza to mark April is Autism Awareness month 2019.

This year’s free, accessible event is themed around T-shirt up-cycling to highlight that, as well as including, enabling and inspiring children of all abilities to reach their potential, we are aiming to demonstrate how we can include the environment in our actions.

Secondhand, damaged and unwanted T-shirts will be transformed by participants into a 5m x 1.5m artwork designed by volunteer artists Bahraini Mohammed Mirza Ali Taha and Madu Sarda from Nepal. Children will also make bags, toys and other items out of unwanted T-shirts.

Trash to Treasure opens on Sunday at 9am in the Central Atrium on the 2nd floor of Harbour Gate in the Bahrain Financial Harbour. The event runs to April 11. Individuals and groups can take part between 9am-11am daily and 4pm-6pm on Wednesday. There is two-hour free parking on site.

We are delighted to have the support of Harbour Gate, BMMI, Wild About Art Company, Paint and Palette and more than 20 volunteer artists.

School groups must book their spaces in advance: call RIA on 17716871.  Volunteer artists should contact me.

Damaged, unwanted but clean T-shirts can be dropped off at RIA Centre in Adliya, Harbour Gate or BMMI HQ in Seef … or why not bring along an old T-shirt to up-cycle at the event!

Please help us to make this a single use plastic free event by bringing your own reusable water bottle.

The Royalists hold The Memorial Trophy every year in honour of all the people who were killed and affected by The Al Dana Dhow Tragedy in 2006.

A total of 24 Royalists played in the tournament held at the Royal Golf Club last Friday.

This year the trophy was won by Steve Hill who had an excellent Nett 72 beating Chris Mathieson & Pete Donkin on countback.

BD100 was raised in total and has been donated to help maintain the memorial headstone in the Christian cemetery in Manama.

Barry Hobday, event chief organiser and president of the Royalists.

l Editor’s note: The disaster claimed the lives of 58 people, when a dhow capsized on March 30, during a party organised by contractor Nass, Murray and Roberts to celebrate the completion of concreting on the Bahrain World Trade Centre.

THE BRCS will start distributing aid to families ahead of the holy month. BRCS will announce dates of distribution to 73 areas across Bahrain later. In total 4,138 underprivileged Bahraini families will receive Ramadan aid.

I would like to express my appreciation to our social services committee, volunteers and members for all their efforts.

All the society’s committees are working hard to reach the actual needy and meet their need and to preserve their humanity and dignity based on a set of criteria accumulated society’s experience to provide aid for more than 40 years now.

BRCS urges all supporters, including private companies, institutions, individuals and well-wishers, to come forward and support us so that we can together help this Ramadan.

Mubarak Al Hadi, BRCS general director.
