Gulf Weekly HAPPY BIRTHDAY BAHRAIN - She says

Gulf Weekly Stan Szecowka
By Stan Szecowka

I got hit in the face by a football flying through the air at full speed. Okay, this happened more than 10 years ago, but the pure fear and terror of being near any football has still not died down. Perhaps that’s why I have ultimate respect for anyone brave enough to attempt the sport. With that said, a big CONGRATULATION goes out to our National Football Team for winning the Gulf Cup! (Smooth, I know). Just like many countries around the world, I’m sure the people of Bahrain celebrate their victories with the continuous honking of car horns! No? Oh...

This win could not have come at a more perfect time with Bahrain’s National Day right around the corner from this celebration. This actually reminds me of the period of time we all experience between Christmas and New Year’s Day. It is a utopian time where rainy days are not viewed as gloomy but an optimum opportunity to stay indoors and relax- the rain has us fooled people!

Bahrain’s National Day and the Gulf Cup win provide us with a glass half full mentality where nothing can seem too bad. Alosra doesn’t have any more scones? No issues, I’ll take a muffin instead. On other days, if I am denied my Alosra scone, things can get ugly. Also, a muffin? Really? National Day is a day of pride. It is a day of patriotism to the land that has given us sandy coloured camels and sugar sweet dates. The enthusiasm and love showcased by Bahraini nationals, and even expats like myself, towards the country we inhabit is undeniable.

Happy National Day everyone!
