The Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) has been working with Formula One with the aim of possibly staging the 2020 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix in December, writes Mai Al Khatib-Camille.

The Formula One hopes to start its delayed season in Austria in July without spectators and ending it in the Gulf in December.

BIC chief executive Shaikh Salman bin Isa Al Khalifa told GulfWeekly: “We have been working with F1 to evaluate the possibility of hosting our 2020 race later in the year, in December. F1 has provided an update on how the shape of the season will likely evolve and we will continue to work with them and all our stakeholders to establish defined plans.

“The most important consideration for us will be to ensure that the structure of our event is appropriate in the context of the prevailing situation at the time. The welfare of all involved must come first and that means ensuring that everyone who plays a part in the race weekend is properly protected. We look forward to providing updates in due course on how our plans develop.”

According to Formula One chairman and chief executive Chase Carey, racing in Europe will start through July, August and (the) beginning of September.

As reported in our sister paper the GDN, Carey said: “September, October and November would see us race in Eurasia, Asia and the Americas, finishing the season in the Gulf in December with Bahrain before the traditional finale in Abu Dhabi, having completed between 15-18 races.”

Other races still hoping to be rescheduled are Vietnam, China, Azerbaijan, Spain, the Netherlands and Canada.
