Bahraini doctor Salma Al Hiddi always had a passion for fashion and dreamt of one day launching her own line, writes Mai Al-Khatib-Camille.
Last year, she combined her love of design with her second interest, Arabic calligraphy, to create a collection that speaks volumes.
Huruf, which means letters in Arabic, started with twilly scarves featuring alphabets or names beautifully written in Arabic calligraphy.
“I started my business while I was studying in medical school,” said Salma, 24, from A’ali. “During my holidays and breaks, I would take the opportunity to do what I love which includes art and crafts. I have always been into styling and fashion ever since I was little and my passion grew as I got older.
“I used to design pieces for myself, my family and close friends. I received a lot of compliments on every piece I wore or the on the ones they did. That’s when I decided to take it further. Little by little, I started with twilly scarves.”
The twilly is a long and narrow scarf usually made of 100 per cent silk that is incredibly versatile. People use it as a hair accessory, neck scarf, bag charm and more. Small, but colourful, a twilly can easily work with any outfit.
After continuous support from her customers, family and friends, Salma decided it was time to launch a clothing line. Her colourfully chic and comfortable collection boasts jalabiyas, dresses and loose harem-style rompers. Her designs are all made in Bahrain with cotton and silk.
Delighted with making her design dreams a reality, Salma encourages others to never give up on what they believe in and to follow their passions in life as you never know where it may take you.
