Community crusader Miranthi Dole and her band of big-hearted volunteers from across the kingdom are joining hands, yet again, to celebrate the spirit of giving during the holy month with their annual Ramadan Food Drive.

The caring campaign, which was launched on March 20, is run under the unregistered charity called ‘A Box of Goodness’ with the aim of spreading acts of kindness with packages full of non-perishable products donated to families in need.

“We have been collecting and distributing non-perishable food for Ramadan since 2018,” said Sri Lankan Malay Miranthi, better known as Miro, who is the founder of the initiative.

Since the initiative was launched, they have shared more than 3,000 food packs with members of the Migrant Workers Protection Society, women assisted by the Shamsaha women’s crisis intervention group and families in need.

“This is our fifth consecutive edition Alhamdulillah and with the help of generous hearts in our community, we are ensuring that everyone in need is able to observe the fast comfortably – inshallah,” added Miro.

People are being urged to donate items such as dates, rice, dhal, chickpeas, flour, oil, spices, sugar, tea, milk powder, coffee, harees, jareesh, green gram, sago, ghee, pasta, noodles, coconut milk powder, oats, potatoes and canned foods.

“A little goes a long way,” Miro added. “Reach out and help in any way possible as it contributes towards a better world. Let’s not leave anyone hungry and share our blessings with everyone around us.”

While the giving group’s goal remains the same this year, ‘A Box of Goodness’ is also collaborating with the well-known Lettuce Run ladies group in which individuals can run for the cause and donate in the process.

“We ask all ladies to show their support and join us on April 5 from 4.30pm at Bahrain Harbour for the Run for Ramadan,” said Miro. “The only entry fee would be to donate any non-perishable food item towards our cause. All donations will go towards aiding the main project, which is the Ramadan Food Drive.

“We are collecting donations until April 20 at the Bahrain Rugby Football Club in Saar. We also have a drop off site in Juffair but please message us on social media for the location. Also, all donations are bagged in eco-bags in a hope to reduce our use of plastic.

“We also encourage people to talk about us and support us by donating and participating in the run. Social media is a very powerful tool and we would love the local community to spread the word about our work.”

The next step within this Ramadan Project will be to collect new toys for children in need, celebrating Eid Al Fitr.
