The first two episodes of post-apocalyptic black comedy series Pluribus are out now on Apple TV, with a weekly release scheduled until December 26.

Created by Vince Gilligan, who also made Breaking Bad (2008 to 2013) and Better Call Saul (2015 to 2022), the series follows author Carol Sturka (Rhea Seehorn), who is one of the only 12 people in the world immuned to the effects of ‘The Joining’, a virus that caused the population to transform into a peaceful hive mind.

The show tackles the complexities of a ‘happiness apocalypse’ in a world without oppression, famine or poverty.

In an interview, Vince stated that he wants his new work to make the audience discuss and dissect together.

“I love the idea of people watching this thing and arguing over it, not angrily, but spiritedly,” he said.

“It was a great moment in the writers’ room where two of my writers argued over this (the plot). I just sat back and I was just tickled because that’s the kind of show I want to make,” he added.

The director also revealed that he started building the idea about a male protagonist that everybody is nice to while simultaneously working on Better Call Saul. However, he eventually decided to go with a female lead.

“In the early seasons of Better Call Saul, I realised how much I love Rhea Seehorn, so I decided: Let’s make it a female protagonist. I want to write this thing for Rhea. She deserves to be the star of her own show,” he noted.
