The husband and his mid-life crisis continues. I’m not complaining though and I’m thankful it has happened here in sunny Bahrain. For I have seen some expat men veer off in a rather different mid-life direction in Bangkok, for instance.

I can put up with his early morning disappearances now he has finally learned that repeatedly hitting the ‘snooze’ icon on his phone from 4am at weekends is ill advised when sharing a bed with his feisty redheaded wife; who actually looks forward to a bit of a long lie-in, like most sensible people at weekends.

As some of you may know, it started with the running, which led to swimming and cycling, culminating in triathlons. But now an old flame has been rekindled in his life which he thought wouldn’t be possible here on the island – mountain biking without the mountains!

It all started with a trip to the TriLife bike shop in Zallaq in search of bike keys where he met a friendly South African guy called Corne who runs the business. The husband was mighty impressed with TriLife which stocks quality products, sells and rents out bikes along with covering all aspects of servicing and parts. I am told it’s a biker’s heaven!

But it’s the social and good community mix that Corne from TriLife has created that makes even myself think of getting in on the act.

This weekend the husband was off on a guided bike ride with his new buddies around Bahrain Bay, the Diplomatic Area, Bab-Al-Bahrain and finishing up with a delicious traditional Bahraini breakfast at the oldest café in Bahrain - Haji’s.

Maybe, I’ll be setting my own alarm next weekend …
