Abdulla Sultan Faraj and Salem Khalifa set a new record in the BMMI-sponsored Johnnie Walker Foursomes competition held at Awali Golf Club. The winning pair returned an outstanding score of 45 points never before achieved in its 50-year history.

The format sees golfers compete in teams of two, taking turns to tee off and continuing to take alternate shots until the hole is finished. It might sound easy but it certainly proved challenging to many golfers as they found themselves in positions on the course they had never seen before. It turned out to be a closely contended match with five teams vying for 4th position on 38 points.

During the prize-giving, Club Captain Bill Scarth highlighted the long history of BMMI which dates back to 1883 when merchant Paul Gray set up in Bahrain. The company later became Gray Mackenzies, then Inchcape before becoming the rather hard to say Bahrain Maritime and Mercantile International. In 1999, the company became wholly Bahraini-owned and assumed the much more manageable name of BMMI.

Scarth also highlighted the long association between the company and AGC, dating back to the 1930s. Indeed, alongside the BMMI Johnnie Walker Foursomes, the club also hosts the Gray Mackenzie Pairs knock-out competition.

The club has recently upgraded all the tee-box signage around the course. Never one to let an opportunity slip by, Scarth has been auctioning two of the old signs after each competition.  Bidding for these unique items of memorabilia has been fierce and so far six signs have been auctioned and an impressive BD225 raised for charity.

Prizes were presented by Scarth and tournament director Serwin Rampersad.
