The Wednesday Wackers continue to annoy those who have to go to work by enjoying a nine-hole whack at Awali Golf Club each Wednesday morning - a mix of retirees, workers who are masters of their own working schedule, and others sporting big smiles in the knowledge that someone else is keeping them in the lifestyle to which they have become accustomed.
With only four Wednesdays available for play, February was sandwiched between January and March’s five.
Sprinting out of the blocks in the first week, five players made an immediate dash for the Monthly Trophy all with 19 points: Diane Loney, Serwin Rampersad, Peter Rogers, Rick De Groot and Metje Alink.
Diane consolidated her good start to the month in week two, pulling into the lead with another 19 points, only Peter Rogers hanging on to her apron strings with 16 points, whilst the other three contenders dropped away in the leaders’ dust.
Week three saw Diane having none of this players-on-her-heels malarkey, filling up her tank with extra nitro, roaring away with an even better 20 point score. But Peter Rogers was still hanging in there by his fingernails and master class chipping, carding 18 points.
Entering the last week Diane, with 58 points in her handbag, was looking like a sure bet for the trophy. It was up to Peter to upset the apple cart if he could, but with only 53 points so far under his wing, he would need a 22-pointer to raise his score to 59. That did not happen, and as a result Diane Loney cruised to the Monthly Trophy glory.
