GulfWeekly did a phone survey of 60 women between the age of 18 to 45 years belonging to various nationalities ranging from Bahrainis, Pakistani, British, Thai, Indians, Europeans and other Arab countries.
Based on their response we concluded that 45 per cent of the women felt harassed whereas 40 per cent felt angry at the lewd comments passed on the street, 10 per cent felt vulnerable and invaded whereas only five per cent felt flattered at the attention.
Around 65 per cent viewed catcalling as insulting and degrading towards women, 20 per cent thought it was rude and 15 per cent thought it was vulgar conduct.
While 90 per cent of the women chose to ignore such behaviour whereas a mere 10 per cent took matters in their hands by glaring or answering back at the perpetrators.
No one reported the matter to the authorities believing that it would be a “futile exercise”.
