More royal drama on the cards with three of the people who have publicly claimed they were extremely close with the late Diana, Princess of Wales, not receiving invites to her memorial service later this month.
Her former private secretary Patrick Jephson, her former Scotland Yard bodyguard Ken Wharfe and Paul Burrell — the butler who has gone to great pains to inform all who will listen that he and the princess were as close as close can be — have all been left off the guest list by her sons. They are said to have expressed disgust at the way in which the three, all close to Diana during the most troubled years of her of her life, have cashed in on her memory since her death 10 years ago. Jepherson and Wharfe have both been criticised for uncomplimentary memoirs of her while Paul Burrell’s own musings on the Princess have been described as a “cold and overt betrayal”. I have to admit to not having followed anything much about the first two, but Burrell has disgusted me at every turn. He is so obviously desperate for money and the spotlight that he has used his royal connections in the tackiest of ways. From I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here where he talked incessantly about the royal family to Australian Princess where he is the lead in a team of people who take a bunch of Australian ugly duckling and turns one of them into a so called princess — complete with a date with ‘a real European prince’ for the winner. Not to mention his tell-all book and various other embarrassing forays into the world of television. Much as I see her merit as the ‘People’s Princess’, I’m not a particular die-hard Diana fan, but I can’t help but feel disgusted at the lows Burrell has gone to and the complete tackiness he has connected her name and memory to. How embarrassing to be one of his two sons.
