Leave Facebook alone

HEADLINES across the media in Bahrain have been raging with reaction towards one of the Members of Parliament and his mission to ban the social networking site Facebook. This, of course, has angered many people, especially the teenage users of Facebook since it is very popular within this age group. To be frank, it has annoyed me more than it has angered me because this MP seriously needs a wake up call.

First of all, many people are on the waiting list with the ministry for a housing allowance. Furthermore, the Ministry of Education seriously needs to evaluate the educational system across Bahrain as many of the textbooks being used are very outdated. So it really surprised me that this MP, who opposes Facebook, had the nerve to actually 'waste' precious Parliamentary time on discussing why the site should be banned in Bahrain.

He argued that the website went against the traditions and culture of Bahrain which was Islamic and very conservative.

Well Mr MP, I believe you are foolish to use that excuse in front of the whole of Bahrain and the media.

You claim that Facebook allowing girls to upload their photographs, which by the way can only be seen by the girl's family and friends she chooses, goes against Islam but I think you are surely wasting your time.

Forgive me Bahrain if I sound a bit rude in this week's column but this Member of Parliament is really getting on my nerves this past month.

I would say to the MPs stop wasting time on discussing whether Facebook is corrupting the minds of the youth and start questioning why our youth are running along the path of destruction. You could be looking at the problem of under-age smoking and while you are at it, I surely wish you would consider banning alcohol in the kingdom, maybe, just maybe, drunk stupid drivers wouldn't then drink and drive and kill innocent children.

Leave Facebook alone!
