Airlines slash prices to woo travellers

AIR_travel for passengers flying in and out of Bahrain promises to be sweeter on the pocket in the coming months.

While the biggies - Gulf Air and British Airways - fight it out to attract passengers with cut-price offers, the kingdom's latest arrival - Bahrain Air - plans to purchase new aircraft as well as add new destinations to its itinerary.

Gulf Air, the kingdom's national flag carrier, has announced a 'Big Seat Sale' promotion for Ramadan that offers a ticket to London and back for as little as BD130.

Although all prices announced are exclusive of taxes and surcharges, passengers can travel between Bahrain and Dubai, Kuwait and Doha for as little as BD20.

A return ticket to Mumbai, the financial capital of India, comes for BD80, to Beirut for BD100, to Cairo for BD120 and to Frankfurt for BD170.

The sale of tickets for travel up to November 30 is open until September 11 by visiting gulfair.com

Not to be left behind, British Airways, which operates daily flights from the kingdom to Heathrow, has announced fares from Manama to London that start at BD250 and to New York from BD381.

These fares are available until October 31and come inclusive of all taxes and charges and can be purchased online at ba.com until September 3.

Close on its heels comes the announcement by Bahrain Air, the kingdom's private low-budget carrier, that it is to purchase six Airbus A320 aircraft for $450 million. This increases the airline's fleet size to 11.

In the first six months of its operations the airline has flown 252,000 passengers to 10 destinations in the Gulf region, the Middle East, North Africa, the Levant and India.

Managing director Ibrahim Al Hamar announced that Bahrain Air will add four destinations each in November this year and February next year and another two in April 2009, taking the total destinations operated by the airline to 20.

Without revealing full details he promised that they would include flights to Kuwait, Dhaka in Bangladesh, Khartoum in Sudan and India.
