Warm the bit before you tack up: You can run hot water over it, or breathe on it or warm it in your hands. After all, how many of us would like an icy piece of steel put in our mouths on an already cold day!

Cool down the horse properly after riding: One test is to see if their ears are hot, if they are walk them off some more, ears should be cool - not cold or hot!

Keep muscles warm: If your horse is used to being stabled and blanketed consider using a 'rump rug' to keep his muscles from getting chilled while riding.

Dress in layers: Dress yourself in layers that can be removed easily if you get warm while working your horse.

Wear safe boots: You may want to wear warmer boots in the winter, make sure they are not so bulky as to get wedged into your stirrups. They should still slide out easily if you take a spill.

Warm up: A good grooming session before you ride will warm you up and will help warm your horse's muscles, too.

Really cold, wet or horrible days: Tack cleaning! Visualise summer and those 50 degrees way too hot moments and enjoy the cold, or simply enjoy and appreciate your horse.
