ICECREAM lovers worried about their expanding waist lines can try a healthy alternative thanks to the arrival of a fresh, non-fat, frozen yoghurt craze from the US.
Pinkberry has opened its first store at Bahrain City Centre convinced that its refreshing concept will lick the opposition.
Nader Hallal, head of marketing of leading retailer M H Alshaya Co which has introduced the America brand into the Gulf market, said: "We have high expectations and believe we will do great here. I am convinced that with Pinkberry we will bring a fresh and appealing experience to the kingdom. This concept is very unique to the island - it is refreshing, inviting and authentic."
Boasting the tag line 'swirly goodness', the outlet offers three distinct flavours - original, green tea and pomegranate and a variety of toppings to choose from including fresh and dried fruits, nuts and chocolate. Rich in calcium, vitamins and minerals, Pinkberry yoghurt has been certified by the National Yoghurt Association of the US.
The interior of the outlet is distinctive with bright green and white furniture. The walls are painted yellow to symbolise the sun, the menu list has a blue background to symbolise the sky and the flooring is designed with stones to replicate a seaside.
Mr Hallal said: "Pinkberry is all about making the customers feel fresh and wish them a great day. It takes 20 minutes to finish a cup of goodness."
The parent company is headquartered in California with a large number of outlets spread across South California and New York, finding a striking fan base among Hollywood royalty.
Mr Hallal explained that the company is planning on aggressive expansion plans within the region for the next three years. He said: "We are planning to open more outlets within Bahrain as well as in neighbouring countries."
Customers have been quick to give it a taste test. Fatima Fakhroo, 28, a marketing executive from Manama, first tried the treat on holiday in Los Angeles. She said: "This brings back memories of when I had first tasted it. It's still great!"
Her friend and colleague, Sara Albastaki, 29, from Saar, dipped her tongue in the pomegranate offering and was visibly overwhelmed with its flavour. "I prefer this over icecream any day! It is so good!"
Tourists Birgit Cuntz tried a sample too and said: "I have always loved yoghurt and this is so refreshing!"
Shilpa's verdict: Pomegranate flavoured yoghurt with four toppings of choice - fresh strawberries, dried cranberries, hazelnuts and dates... if there is a heaven on earth, I may very well have stumbled across it!
