BAHRAIN will this week wave a fond farewell to one of its better and certainly most pioneering hockey players, Yadwinder Singh, writes Abu George.

Son of a former Indian great, ‘Binder’ came through the junior Indian ranks, making his debut for the U-16 before also representing them at U-19 and U-21 level, culminating in a tournament in Singapore in 2001.

Since then Yadwinder has retained his ties with the national team as many of his former colleagues and friends went on to represent India in the Olympic Games and World Championships, and still do.

At a regional level he has embraced the development of the sport, making weekly trips to the semi-professional league in Qatar, where he has represented current three-time champions, the Wanderers.

In a league that now comprises a number of former full and junior internationals, Yadwinder has impressed with his pace and close control, while inter-changing well with his team-mates.

While representing the Wanderers, they have collected a number of GCC titles in Oman, Bahrain and Dubai, while also gaining experience further afield in Holland and Spain.
