Missing a putt you should hole is one of the most frustrating things that can happen during a round of golf. Even worse is when you have just hit two or three good shots to get onto the green and then proceed to take three putts to get the ball into the hole.
For players looking to improve their putting, having a professional look at your stroke and set-up is probably the place to start. However, it might also be an idea to assess your pre-shot routine (if you even have one!).
Follow the simple steps below and see if they could help into your game.
*Mark your ball! Every Time!! *Stand behind the ball and look directly at the hole. *Identify any possible breaks in the line of the putt. Look for high and low points on the green to help you. *Walk up and around the hole to try and feel the contours of the green under your feet. *Pick a point on the green which is on the apex of the line that you think the ball will roll on. *Line up the logo on the ball directly at this point on the green. You could also draw a line on the ball to use if it makes it easier to line up. *Step in and settle yourself over the ball. *Line your putter up square with the line on your ball. Trust that you have read the green correctly and fully commit to a confident stroke, accelerating through the ball. *Repeat until the ball is in the hole!
If you can get into the habit of using a routine like this, it will probably not transform you into an incredible putter like Tiger Woods. However, what it will do is focus your attention more on every putt which is definitely a good thing. In turn, you will be in a better frame of mind and in a better position to hit more good putts.
