I’m so excited about Formula One coming to Bahrain again … not so much about the racing but the entertainment that goes with it! The rumour spreading like wildfire around the St Chris playground is that LMFAO will be appearing in concert. Wow! When will the line-up officially be announced?

Amy,
LMFAO fan.

Editor’s note: The entertainment has still to be officially announced … watch this space. For the initiated LMFAO is an American duo – Stefan (RedFoo) Gordy and his nephew Skyler (SkyBlu) Gordy. RedFoo is also the son of Motown music mogul Berry Gordy and SkyBlu is his grandson.

The duo’s name is an Internet slang abbreviation for something that cannot be repeated in a family newspaper.

We are in desperate need of marshals and are ready to pay BD5 for each helper. Please email us the names and phone numbers of those who are interested in helping serve our races and hence our society.

We have now completed our main running events for the season and are approaching our mixed sports events. Our first event is going to be the Riffa Views Duathlon which is a 3km run, followed by a 20km bicycle ride, followed by a 5km run.

This event will take place on March 16 in Riffa Views. We are now finalising the bicycle route with the authorities in order to make it as safe as possible.

The tentative route will be from the international school car park, down and around the horse track and back up to Riffa Views.

Next, we are working on the Olympic Triathlon which is set for March 30. It will be around the south of Bahrain.

We are very thankful for the unlimited support we are receiving from the Bahrain Athletics Association and the Olympic Committee. They are continuously encouraging us to organise such events.

Remember, your participation is important not just for your health, but for the society we live in. Bahrain Road Runners is a charitable, non-profit  running club. We get paid with satisfaction. And thanks to you all for making it happen.

It was terrible to hear of the horrific road accident near Saar which claimed the lives of six young women.

There has been much written recently on the letters pages of the local press about the incident but I have not seen one raise the issue of wearing seat belts.

It has not been made clear in any of the news reports either as to whether the driver and passengers were strapped into the vehicle – certainly one of the passengers could not have been because there are only three in the back seats of any standard saloon.

Perhaps some good can come out of this tragedy with the launch of a ‘clunk-click’ campaign, with the backing of the heartbroken families, similar to the one in the UK which has resulted in saving a countless number of lives.

There are so many times that I have felt like screaming in Bahrain at drivers and their passengers, particularly those carrying young children, who fail to use their seat belts.

I was just wondering why is this so commonplace on this island’s roads, it simply makes no sense? Isn’t it against the law not to strap up?

J V
Saar.
