Newcomers Venus almost notched their first victory of the season before being dramatically pulled back by St Christopher’s Seniors in week four of the GulfWeekly-sponsored Arsenal Soccer School Bahrain Ladies League.

The Venus girls raced into an early two-goal lead through Fatia Amozlouf and Fatima Mahmood with some great forward movement, but two goals by Tamara Kawash denied them maximum points.

In the battle of the two remaining unbeaten teams, Arsenal Red overcame Joga Bonito. As expected, the game was very tight, with few clear chances for either side.

Arsenal Red made the breakthrough with two goals from Reema Al Qassab and one for Rama Salem on her birthday to win by an impressive three-goal margin.

However, huge credit goes to a determined Arsenal defence and brave goalkeeper Natalie Harake for shutting out the dangerous Joga frontline to maintain their top position.

Arsenal Yellow kept up the pressure on their elder club mates, getting back to winning ways and consolidating second place with an excellent 8-5 win over Eastern Flames.

This scoreline means that the Yellows have now scored an impressive 23 goals which is more than double the tally of any of the other teams, but have conceded an average of four goals a game at the same time!

The girls were exciting to watch, with coach Deena obviously following the old Kevin Keegan approach at Newcastle United, when he famously said that if the opposition scored four, his team would score five!

Next week sees the last of the first round matches with the Reds facing St Chris, the Yellows playing Joga Bonito and Venus searching for that oh, so close first win against Eastern Flames.
