Gulf Weekly Crowd roars on BRFC to victory

Bahrain Rugby Football Club’s (BRFC) first XV got their Gulf Top Six campaign back on track on Friday as they ran out 22-20 winners over Dubai Hurricanes in Janabiyah.

Early tries from Tom TJ Jankowski, Paul O’Meara and Chris Coupland and the boot of Richard Ryan put the home side in the driving seat by half-time but they were starved of possession in the second period and saw the visitors claw their way back into it with a couple of tries of their own.

In the end though, Bahrain hung on for a deserved victory in front of delighted home fans.

Bahrain prop Rich Muncaster was a happy man. He said: “Any win in this competition is hard-earned so we have to be pleased with that result, particularly after two disappointing losses away from home.

“We scored three great tries and defended really well for the most part so that will give us a big lift going into the next few weeks. We always targeted these home games as must-wins and the home crowd was amazing once again.”

It was a good weekend all round for BRFC, as the under-8, under-9 and under-10 teams returned home after a successful trip to the HSBC Rugby Festival in Dubai with more silverware in tow.

While the Under-8s went well in their competition, the Under-9s ended runners-up in the plate final. The Under-10s though, went all the way and won the plate competition for the second HSBC Series event running, with the inspirational Alex Egan, nine, from Saar, winning the overall player-of-the-tournament award.
