The Rotary Club Manama is calling on footballers to ‘kick for a cause’ in support of a children’s charity by signing up for its annual Six-A-Side tournament this Friday.
The fundraisers have already collected more than BD20,000 from their charitable endeavours for the kingdom’s Reduce Diabetes Amongst Children Programme.
Organising committee chairman Dr Bijan Majidi said: “The Six-A-Side tournament has done extremely well in the past attracting more than 300 participants last year. It’s a successful one-day event.”
Already 30 teams, of which 20 are men and 10 are women, have signed up to take part in the competition that will be held at the Bahrain Rugby Club in Janabiyah from 9am-2pm. The club would welcome more sponsors too.
Rotarians recently donated a mobile diabetes unit to the Bahrain Diabetes Society as part of the club’s ongoing effort to combat Type II Diabetes among young people in the country, where the disease accounts for 12 per cent of child and adult deaths.
The unit travels to schools and neighbourhoods across the island to screen children for diabetes and to help educate families on ways to prevent its onset. The unit’s staff consists of volunteer doctors, nurses, and students from the Bahrain medical campus of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
