The Suzuki Grand Vitara is as old as I am … and it has developed, as I have, greatly over the years.
Since 1988, the Japanese car has expanded in size, become more powerful and changed its exterior dramatically from an unconvincing soft-top to a luxurious mid-sized SUV.
Now in its third generation the new 2013 Grand Vitara boasts a classier look and delivers a great driving experience both on and off road.
The exterior of the test car I drove had a sharp and boxy style unlike many of its rivals that go for a more rounded look.
The Grand Vitara’s front headlights are narrow and give the SUV a sultry look, whereas the rear lights are wide and reinforce the model’s angular look.
The interior of the five-door vehicle is extremely spacious. Along with its six airbags, electronic stability control, cruise control, remote central locking, climate control, keyless start and entry and power windows, the Japanese know that less is more and the Grand Vitara’s options are simple and concise.
The top range model includes a 6.1-inch colour touch-screen, reverse camera, a navigation system, Bluetooth and phone connectivity with audio streaming and contacts, an SD card slot, auxiliary and USB connectivity, CD player and voice control for navigation, audio and telephone functions.
Under the bonnet is a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine with 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. Its acceleration is more than adequate and it has excellent fuel economy.
The drive was relaxed, quiet, comfortable and refined with excellent handling.
I did experience some issues off-road, though. It is better than many of its competitors and is genuinely capable with its power, but testing it for only a few minutes I was confused about the options available on the off-road dial. While not uncomfortable, it’s a far cry from the excellent on-road experience.
And, with the many full beam flashing lights I experienced on the drive back to the showroom, I realised I needed to put my headlights on as it had turned dark.
When I got to the showroom, parked the car and walked into the building, I noticed the headlights were still on … another downfall for this driver who couldn’t seem to get her head around the on/off concept.
This SUV adds a new-found elegance to the marque’s line-up and with a starting price of BD8,995, you get a lot for your money.
