A responsive and safe ride

I have never been a family-car type of girl. And, having driven a range of vehicles over the past few months manufactured by Peugeot, a carmaker that has spawned a number of savvy and sporty models; it may come as a surprise that the 5008 is probably one of my favourites, writes May Al Mousawi.

The exterior is what you would expect a large Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) to look like, but it has a welcome modern twist.

It’s boxy appearance gives it a classic look, but it’s ditched the rounded family face and gone in for a smooth front end … a friendlier face is just what it needs to appeal to families.

The 5008 looks smart with its gradual sloping front end and longer wind-screen. Along with my favourite feature of the car – the full-length sun roof – the head-up display made me feel like I was taking off in a spaceship as I zoomed along the highway.

The only thing I didn’t enjoy about the test car was the red paint job, but thankfully there are other options available.

Either way, the drive was smooth and controlled and even on the bumpy roads, children in the backseat won’t be swaying from side to side.

The steering was sharp and the car was extremely responsive. It was sturdy and felt completely safe.

The interior of the 5008 is spacious enough for all passengers, regardless of where they’re sitting. In addition it’s a seven-seater and when the seats at the rear are folded flat, there is more storage space. Even the front passenger seat folds forward to allow for exceptionally long loads.

The test car had black upholstery and touches of chrome on the steering wheel and the gear stick. Everything is neat and practical. With easy to use touches, family-friendly features include a large storage bin between the two front seats to stuff the children’s essentials and an entertainment system.

It has parking assist, a panoramic glass roof and an impressive rear multi-media system. A folding tray table also comes out of the back of the front seats for the kids to use while watching a DVD on the video screens on the headrests.

The MPV also includes rear parking sensors, cruise control, sun visor curtains for the second and third rows, height adjusters for the passenger seats, USB, AUX and Bluetooth connectivity, CD player and AM/FM radio.

Under the bonnet is a 1.6-litre petrol engine that generates 120bhp paired with a five-speed gearbox.

As I parked the car by the beach and sat in the backseat to check out the entertainment, I looked up to admire the stunning panoramic view of the pigeons and seagulls flying over my head. I guess the fact that it doesn’t slide open is a good thing otherwise I might have been covered in bird poop.

There is no denying the fact that the Peugeot 5008 is a well-built, sturdy MPV and with a new paint job it would be the perfect family vehicle.

Prices start from BD8,950.
