Gulf Weekly Changing perceptions

The Nissan Tiida is undoubtedly one of the most popular models on the road in the kingdom. Many people see it as a sensible ride, perhaps not the most exciting but definitely a safe and durable vehicle.

When I first learned I would be taking one out for a test drive I thought ‘hmmm … been there, done that’ and I didn’t really think much of it. However, the minute I shifted into drive, all that changed and I soon realised why the Tiida is regarded so highly.

A complete refresh of the region’s best-selling compact hatchback adds dynamic styling, class leading spaciousness, advanced technology and greater versatility.

Most things about this model have been upgraded, updated and restyled to the point where it looks and feels like you’re driving a completely different car altogether.

The refreshed and aerodynamic body shape blends style with a sporty influence, complemented by widened and lowered stance, electric-folding mirrors and 17-inch alloys wheels.

Inside, a sleek, modern cabin welcomes the driver. Its design provides comfortable accommodation for up to five adult passengers while the standard 60/40 split rear bench offers the option of tackling bulky loads.

Attractive trims, fine finishes and comfortable seats all added to my test drive experience. Even when I got stuck in traffic, I was sitting pretty in this model and took the opportunity to get better acquainted with the infotainment system, which is remarkably easy to use.

A multimedia package is available including push-start engine, Bluetooth and streaming audio with portable MP3 player through USB port. There is also a 5.8-inch colour touch display, navigation, rear view camera, auto and rear A/C vents with dual climate control.

There are two engine options available and five well-equipped grades. The 1.6-litre ‘S’, which comes as standard with 60/40 rear split bench, dual front airbags, Anti-lock Braking System, Electronic Brake Distribution, Brake Assist, Xtronic Continuously Variable Transmission and keyless entry, rising to the 1.8-litre SL Plus, with leather seats, six airbags and electrically-controlled sunroof.

For me, the really impressive thing is the surprising amount of power at its disposal. It also handles significantly better than its predecessor, especially when taking corners at speed.

The steering is responsive to the gentlest of touches, which is a feature I normally only experience with luxury sports cars … hats off to the engineers there. Driving this Tiida is far from tedious.

While some drivers look for a sporty model to turn heads and others enjoy the rugged capabilities of a bulking SUV, the vast majority simply want a reliable machine to commute to work or ferry their family around at the weekend.

Those seeking the latter may get more than they bargain for if they opt for the new Tiida. It’s quiet, smooth, comfortable, reliable, and, perhaps most importantly, affordably priced.

Prices start from BD5,995.
