The Awali Golf Club PGIS Tournament, now in its eighth year, has two distinct parts, the first of which is a competition for members.

In addition, the event also enjoys something of an international flavour, as it is the second day of a two-day invitational for a select group of senior management that Pan-Gulf invite from some of their partner overseas companies such as AGAS-Remtec (UK/USA), McWane (US) and Matre-Maskin (Norway).

The lucky invitees play in a sponsors-only competition, for which Pan-Gulf award prizes for individual days and the overall weekend’s play. By all accounts, Pan-Gulf’s first day at the Royal Golf Club was a great success, which was topped off by a memorable evening into the small hours at The Dilmun Club.

The Friday competition at Awali saw a large field of players, perhaps attracted by a rather special prize for a hole-in-one on the 12th, namely a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, organised by Ian Jennings of Harley-Bahrain, playing in his final competition before leaving for a new post.

Sadly, the sound of a euphoric winner cruising down the highway was not to be heard, and the insurance company’s money remained safe.

In the main competition, Hamed Salem demonstrated his great play again, being the overall winner with a score of net 65. To the deafening roar of ‘handicap cut’ from the crowd in the clubhouse, he also took home the medal for the day’s best gross score.

Prizes were presented by the various invitees from overseas, with the Flight winners being: Flight-1 1st: Ali Musbah, 2nd: Khalid Salem, 3rd: Hendrik Wessels. Flight-2: 1st: Lynn St Lawrence, 2nd: Ahmed Majid, 3rd: Vidhu Mittal. Flight-3: 1st: Ahmed Mohammed, 2nd: Tony Robinson, 3rd: Arunava Banerjee.

The venue then changed from the clubhouse to its terrace, where John Steer and Steve Newall tinkled the ivories, plucked the strings and serenaded, entertaining the gathering.

SAFFRIYA 1 were crowned overall winners of the Championship Flight in the 16th AMH Island Classic golf tournament, which came to a close after three days of action at His Majesty King Hamad’s private golf course in Saffriya.

The victors secured first place with a top score of 51.2. They registered their mark on the opening day of the competition, which was played in the ever-popular Texas Scramble format.

None of the other participating teams who took to the greens on days two and three could beat their mark.

HSBC were the competition’s overall winners in the Premier Flight. They were in action on the second day of play, and  registered a 53.5 finishing mark.
