Golf Tip: Getting to grips with the club

Holding a golf club correctly is very important as this influences the way the club is swung. The grip also controls the position of the clubface at impact which is one of the most important factors.

We grip the club with our lead hand first so that the club is placed between the fingers and the palm. The right pad of the hand should be on top of the club with the thumb pointing down towards the club head.

The trail hand has to be placed onto the club so that the thumb of the lead hand is covered when we look down upon it. It is important to create a trigger finger with the forefinger in the trail hand so that a V shape is created using the thumb and finger.

Check points are seeing two knuckles in the lead hand and making sure the thumb on this hand is covered with the trail hand.

It is also important not to hold the golf club too tightly as this will create tension in the arms and shoulders. Grip the club as if you were holding a tube of toothpaste, where you would not squeeze the paste out of the tube.
