Employees of DHL Express have been pulling out all the stops with their charitable endeavours over the holy month and also gave a timely boost to our joint Ramadan Appeal 2015 in aid of Syrian refugee families.

Helen Edwards, the logistic company’s programme manager MEA, called into the Bahrain Rugby Football Club with packages of clothing as preparations are made to collect the full boxes of donations after Eid.

The much-needed supplies will then be distributed to refugee camps where desperate, displaced people of Syria have gathered.

Nour Suliman, CEO Middle East and North Africa, said: “We choose to act; we choose to do what we can to make a difference in the lives of people around us and it’s always great to see our staff getting directly involved.”

DHL has also delivered thousands of kilos in food donations in Bahrain this Ramadan after the Express team held donation drives from Morocco to Afghanistan, covering 14 countries.

In Bahrain, DHL staff engaged in a number of activities including delivering food boxes containing a variety of food items to 150 local families through the Palm Association, and handing out small meal boxes containing dates and laban at traffic lights during Iftar time so that people caught in traffic could break their fast on their way home.

Staff in Manama also treated orphans to a special treat, by arranging for Bahrain’s national ice hockey team to skate and interact with the young children at the ice skating rink (See Back Page).

The generosity of people in the kingdom has touched the hearts of the organisers of the Gulf Weekly & DHL Express Ramadan Appeal 2015 in aid of the Syrian refugees as a steady stream of shirts, shorts, jumpers, underwear, socks and footwear has arrived at the rugby club to fill up special containers.

The inspirational St Christopher’s School Kindness Club has also encouraged children to fill small packages full of useful items to help children trying to continue their education in temporary classrooms set up in camps.

The number of refugees fleeing the conflict in Syria to neighbouring countries has now passed four million, making it the world’s single largest refugee crisis for almost a quarter of a century.

“It is a population that needs the support of the world but is instead living in dire conditions and sinking deeper into poverty,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres.

Tragically, and with no end in sight to Syria’s war, now in its fifth year, the crisis is intensifying and the number of refugees is rising. The four million milestone comes barely 10 months since the total of three million was reached. At current rates, UNHCR expects the figure to reach around 4.27 million by the end of 2015.
