Bahrain’s bikers roared across the kingdom on Friday on decorated mean machines and dressed in pink to launch breast cancer awareness month.

For the past nine years, the local Harley Owners Group (HOG) Bahrain Chapter has organised a Pink Awareness Ride to support the Think Pink Bahrain campaign and help raise funds for the charity.

This year more than 120 men and women of all ages and different nationalities set off from Riffa Views International School (RVIS) at 8am in pink coloured wigs, bandanas, shirts and over-the-top, fully-kitted bikes to spread their two-wheeled message.

Jules Sprakel, Think Pink Bahrain founder and chairman, said: “I think this event is a great example of community effort at its best. We couldn’t have done it without the HOGS. This is the biggest turn out we have ever had. We even had people that are not part of the HOGs joining in.

“What’s nice to also see is there are more locals joining the ride than when we first started in 2009. This means that we are getting the message across. This is a fantastic way to launch the campaign.”

The pink parade first made its way to the Bahrain Polytechnic in Isa Town with bikers honking their horns in procession-style and revving their engines in unity. The journey ended at ART Rotana Amwaj Islands Bahrain where many celebrated at Choices restaurant’s Pink Brunch.

Market research manager Anna Diamantidou, a 60-year-old from Sanabis, rode her Harley Davidson Baloo machine. She said: “This is my second time participating and I believe more people should join, even if they have cars, because this is for a great cause. Breast cancer can happen to anyone; man or woman, and early check-ups are advised.”

Think Pink Bahrain is aiming to raise more than BD20,000 for breast cancer research, prevention activities and to finish off payment of the first grade approved clinical screening and treatment guidelines.
