She says…

Gulf Weekly She says…

I can say with full certainty that the only thing we teens ever do is sit on our laptops and watch Netflix.

It’s imperative that I check my phone for notifications. I’ve devised a system where every 30 minutes I make a round of my Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Twitter, Tumblr and of course LinkedIn- even between cycles of sleep.

Staring at a screen, any at all, is my favourite pastime, so much so that when I’m asked what my hobbies are on an application form, I mainly detail the joyous feeling I have when I stare at my lock screen- my blank lock screen.

I’m joking! I don’t even have half of the social media apps I mentioned. Seriously though, it’s almost laughable how many adults think that the youth of today do nothing but lie lazily on a droopy, sad couch with a screen shoved in their faces. Yes, technology has advanced itself and we utilise it more than we ever have before, but don’t think we’ve stopped our football games and battles of chess.

I am a firm believer that having a hobby is healthy as it keeps your mind active and working. I for one enjoy dabbling in a new art project ever so often.

Interestingly, screens have found ways to integrate with many traditional activities previous generations are familiar with. For instance, I look to the interweb for new designs and techniques for painting and I’m sure some readers right now are accessing this article via a website, instead of a physical newspaper.

Contrary to the standard archetype of what constitutes an ‘activity’, technology is now being added to the mix. Hobbies which once kept people on their feet have now interchanged themselves into a form available on one’s screen.

It’s a little unusual but we’re adjusting.
