Gulf Weekly Rugby icon Shaw touches down

ONE of the iconic figures of world rugby and a giant of the game in more ways than one will be visiting Bahrain and speaking at a sporting dinner this weekend.

Simon Shaw will be the star guest at the Bahrain Rugby Football Club (BRFC) event on Friday evening sponsored by HSBC and a limited number of tables are still available.

He will also be also interacting with children and offering advice to the young players competing in the HSBC Junior Rugby Festival Bahrain being held earlier in the day and Saturday.

Shaw, now 42, was capped 71 times for England, was chosen for three Lions tours and enjoyed an outstanding club career ending with a European Cup winner’s medal at French side Toulon.

Born in Kenya, at 6ft 8in, he was one of the tallest men to have played for England.

He played for Bristol at the tender age of 17 despite not taking up the game seriously until he was 16, just after his family had moved to England from Spain.

Shaw became a household name after joining London Wasps in 1997. Wasps won the Tetley’s Bitter Cup two years later and retained it the following season. Playing against Bath in August 2000, Shaw became the only lock in the Premiership to have scored a drop goal.

Shaw also became the first player ever to play in 200 Premiership matches before deciding in 2011 to finish his career overseas.

* Tickets for the dinner are priced at BD20 for members and BD25 for guests. For further details, contact Sam Wilson on 39562408.
