A good rule to speed up play

On the course you are allowed five minutes to search for your ball. If it is not found after five minutes the player has to retake the shot from the original position under a penalty of one shot.

To save time, if you hit a ball into a position where you think it may be lost, you can announce that you will play a provisional ball before walking off to search for the original.

If the first ball is found, that is the one in play and the provisional must be picked up. If the first ball cannot be found after five minutes, the provisional ball is in play, but a one-shot penalty is added to the score.
