EMILY Burns, above, was crowned Young Musician of the Gulf 2007 at the Sheraton Hotel.
The youngster from Dubai College beat five other students, aged 18 and under, with an outstanding performance during the grand final of the four-day competition. The prize was a gold medal donated by Bahrain International Airport and the Stella Taylor Shield. Young composer of the Gulf was Bernard Pereira, also a Dubai College student. St Christopher’s School student Sid Ramachander, who won the overall runner-up award, was also declared Promising Bahrain-based Musician. The Most Promising Musician in the 16-year and under category was Shu Odawara from the Dhahran Academy, Saudi. Three world-renowned adjudicators, including Matthew Souter of the Royal College of Musicians in London, judged the competition and also provided daily master classes to participants.
