Gulf Weekly Regatta ahoy!

High winds got the Bahrain Yacht Club’s ‘Spring Regatta’ off to a flying start at the weekend when lasers, open dinghies, hobie cats and cruisers took to the waters off the coast of Sitra.

The two-day event hosted the first ‘laser veteran’ category for the over-50s which proved the most popular of the categories.
Sailing sensation Sami Kooheji competed in the laser standard section and, unsurprisingly, took first place. His parents took part in the laser veteran section and won first and second places.
Mr Kooheji said: “It’s great to be here as a family, the wind was good, it’s been well organised and we’ve had a fantastic day.”
Anne Koeji added: “We’ve always sailed as a family, but it’s been a long time since we did it together. I could see Sami off in the distance. It’s been a great day.”
Officer of the Day, Dave Summers said: “The regatta’s gone really well, 60 people have taken part and the force three breeze has really helped.”
Two races were held each day and spectators enjoyed the carnival atmosphere and live music on the club’s beach. On Saturday a raffle was held in aid of the Palm Association charity.
Sailing instructor Rees Hetherington said: “The beach has been busy, the weather has been gorgeous and it’s been a really vibrant weekend.”
