PREPARATIONS are forging ahead and major sponsors are jumping on board to support the 18th American Mission Hospital Island Classic Charity Golf Tournament.

This year’s much-awaited competitive golfing community event will be held on November 12, 13 & 14 at the private golf course of His Majesty King Hamad in Sakhir.

Chief Medical Officer/CEO George Cheriyan was delighted and said: “The AMH Island Classic charity golf tournament is an exclusive event and is the major fundraiser of the hospital.

“Since its inception in 1996, it has become a much-awaited and coveted event in the sporting calendar of Bahrain.”

The Royal Golf Club’s team headed by Steve Havrilla, general manager of the Troon Golf-managed facility at Riffa Views, will ensure the competition is once again well organised and professionally staged.

“With the special endorsement of His Majesty the King, this is one of our most prestigious fundraising events enabling us to buy much-needed medical equipment for our three hospitals on the island as well as supporting our community outreach programmes,” explained Shaikh Mohamed bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, chairman of the AMH board of directors.

AMH is a not-for-profit organisation aimed at ensuring the most vulnerable in the community have access to high-quality affordable healthcare at all times.

Its community outreach programme stems from the original mission of the hospital’s founding fathers and its programmes nowadays range from the identification of chronic medical conditions such as diabetes, special medical care for orphans and the blind, children with special needs and disabilities, as well as screening for breast and colon cancer.

“We are also heavily involved in healthcare education within the community and we offer general healthcare checks at elderly centres and labour camps,” added Shaikh Mohamed.

Alongside the Royal Golf Club and GulfWeekly, sponsors already signed up for this year include Credimax, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland, ACE Insurance & Reinsurance Brokers, Xerox, Jawad Group, Bahrain Confidential and Swiss Food Specialties and helping to co-ordinate the event is the AMH’s Mary O’Shaughnessy, senior manager – events.

Funds raised in the first five years of the tournament were used for the construction of the AMH 2000 building which connects the original hospital buildings via a bridge over one of the busiest roads in Manama.

Good use of the funds continues each year with one of the donations from the 2014 tournament used to purchase an ultrasound unit for the hospital’s gynaecology unit.

This high-profile event receives extensive media coverage and sponsor boards and company banners are placed on the course. There are various levels of sponsorship from hole, silver, gold, platinum to diamond categories.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by the show of support in the community for the hospital’s work and the excitement generated by this annual event,” said O’Shaughnessy, who is providing supporters with full public relations assistance.
