Gulf Weekly Ahmed lifts Seve memorial title

On the fifth anniversary of golfing legend Seve Ballesteros’ death, a memorial tournament was held at the Royal Golf Club to mark the occasion. The individual stableford competition was won by Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed, with a score of 40 points.

Khalifa Daij was runner-up with 38 points on countback while Mohamed Al Sayed had to settle for third place with the same score.

Ballesteros, one of Europe’s most famous golfers, retired from competitive golf in 2007 because of continued poor form, and in 2008 was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. After reports that he would make a return to the spotlight at the 2010 Open Championship, he did not travel to St Andrew’s following the advice of doctors. Ballesteros died of brain cancer on May 7, 2011, aged 54.

“It’s only fitting that we run a competition in tribute to one of the world’s most famous golfers,” said Sohail Singh, the club’s tournament coordinator. “Some of the shots Seve played in his career were truly magnificent and his signature pose after holing the putt at the Open Championship at St Andrews in 1984 is an image that every golfer has etched on their mind. Congratulations to Ahmed on a great score in our memorial event.”

Results: 1st Ahmed Mohamed Ahmed (40 points), 2nd Khalifa Daij (38 c/b), 3rd Mohamed Al Sayed (38). 2’s Club on Hole 2: Saqer Al Noaimi, Mohamed Al Noaimi, John Fitzmaurice & Yaseen Le Falher.
